Kharkov Aviation Institute was established on April 17, 1930, and on August 7, 1998 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine - transformed it into the State Aerospace University.N. Ye. Zhukovskiy "Kharkov Aviation Institute." And the President of Ukraine on 11 September 2000 granted it the status of National KAI institution of higher education. History of KAI is closely connected with the history of the formation and development of domestic aviation, space industry and science.
The Institute is known for creating the first European high-speed aircraft and project the country's first jet engine. Over the years the University has trained over 65,000 professionals. Among them, more than 600 associates and directors of factories, leaders of organizations, chief engineers, chief designers and engineers, about 1,800 doctors and candidates of sciences.
Scientists and experts from KAI and its graduates were directly involved in the design and construction of aircraft families of An, Tu, Be, Su and MiG, Mi, Ka, and the creation of rocket and space technology. The vast majority of the engineering staff of world famous companies, like Enterprise "Antonov" Design Office "Progress", "Aviant" KSAMC, are all graduates of KAI.
The National Aerospace University. ME Zhukovsky "KAI" is the only university in Ukraine with level IV accreditation for specialized institute of higher education which is a comprehensive training personnel for the design and manufacture all types of aircraft, aircraft and rocket engines, electrical equipment and machinery. At KAI more than 12,100 students are trained in 48 specialities each in English and Russian medium. Training of specialists is performed at 10 faculties and 44 departments. The number of full-time faculty is about 820, among whom 75% have academic rank of professor and associate professors, researchers and doctoral candidates of science, 16 academicians and 4 corresponding members of branch academies, 24 State Prize winners.
KAI has many years of close academic and scientific relations with various foreign universities (USA, Germany, France, Mexico, etc.), all aviation training institutions of the CIS countries. Since 2010 students specializing in "Aerospace engineering" can participate in student exchange program with Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and then receive dual diplomas. Departments and laboratories of the University have received grants from more than 20 European and non-governmental organizations to carry out relevant research.
